Western Home Journal recently hosted four well-established Bozeman-area construction industry professionals for a discussion of the current state of architecture, construction, design, and craft in southwest Montana and the intermountain west. Our own Bill Peace, old friends Larry Pearson (Pearson Design Group) and Chris Lohss (Lohss Construction), as well as Jeff Brandner (Brandner Design) all gathered at Stacey’s Old faithful in Gateway for some good old-fashioned discourse about what they love best: architecture and design.

The banter began with whiskey.

Peace Design was honored to be part of a one-of-a-kind project creating a spectacular home on an expansive south Texas ranch. And, we are now thrilled to have it featured in DEPARTURES Home + Design Spring 2021 magazine. The landscape of Hill Country, with its uniquely understated kind of grandeur, created a serene setting. The international lifestyle of the homeowner, Spanish and African influences, and the rich Texas history provided unparalleled inspiration.  But, it was the natural elements of the property such as limestone, clay, cypress, oak, cedar, and walnut that brought the design to life. Most notably, paneling hewed from solid gunstock walnut, ancient stone from Italy and Egypt and thousand-year-old sinker cypress, used in the photo here of the library.

This ranch serves as a primary residence and must be able to scale for large stately gatherings yet perform comfortably for everyday living. We spent years getting all of the details right and worked closely with the owner and architect to use materials collected from around the world. The result is a spectacular Texas ranch that feels as if it has always been there and will belong there for generations to come.

Our River’s Edge project went from a few men gathering in a field to a one-room cabin to a Sportsman’s Paradise. Generous acreage along three miles of the Beaverhead River in Montana is a spectacular backdrop for enjoying nature in comfort. Everything about the interior was thoughtfully chosen to ensure it could hold up to heavy activity coming in from outdoors. It’s a place where you can put your feet up on the coffee table and not worry.

When building and designing an alpine refuge, architecture and the interior design plays an integral part. The natural elements of the outdoors become the focal point of each room through expansive windows and framed views. Beyond that, combining the right materials and textures layered together only adds to the serenity. Hearty and natural materials are best. In particular, reclaimed wood – which has already proven its longevity – adds provenance and history. With the mountains of Montana as a backdrop, your only choice is to honor their majesty.

There is beauty in balance. It creates a natural connection and an intuitive sense of calm. It is an essential element of art and of life. When we are in tune with our surroundings, rooms feel like effortless extensions of ourselves.

In the middle of a hot summer, it’s nice to find a retreat in the middle of moody blues. These cool blues create a soothing atmosphere in our client’s Montana home. We found the great bear painting at Visions West in Bozeman while the expansive blue sky of Blue Sky inspired the serene tones. Whether the house is full of visitors on holiday or one is alone in the woods, it’s nice to have a quiet retreat…even if there are bears overhead.

Irrespective of whether one’s preference is for bourbon or beer, a drink is always welcome after a long day on a Montana ranch. For our client, we hung an antique pendant fixture over the long custom bar where leather stools reminiscent of saddles invite people to gather. Although small, this home bar is large on style.

Simplicity with sophistication and style is a Peace Design principle, and this ranch bar stirs our spirits.

With a custom walnut butcher block island anchoring the space, this chef’s kitchen in Montana proves that rustic interiors can be luxurious. Ample comfortable seating can accommodate many guests, yet the space feels equally welcoming for two. Mountain living may frequently be more casual and relaxed, but this kitchen proves that it can be refined and sophisticated.
